Honey Mustard Deli Salad

No ratings yet
A simple deli-and-lettuce salad finished with the family honey-mustard vinaigrette. The original card recorded the dressing but not practical salad amounts; the approved final keeps that dressing intact and supplies a clear lettuce-to-deli starting point for inexperienced cooks.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Servings: 6 servings
Course: Meat Salad

Ingredients

Salad
  • 1 Romaine lettuce large head, chopped, or 1 bag (about 10 oz / 285 g)
  • 8 oz Sliced deli meat (225 g), cut into thin strips
Family Honey-Mustard Dressing
  • 1/2 cup Oil (120 mL)
  • 1/4 cup Honey (85 g)
  • 1/4 cup Vinegar (60 mL)
  • 1 tsp Yellow mustard (5 g)
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher salt

Equipment

  • Large salad bowl
  • Small bowl or jar with lid
  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Wash and dry the romaine very well, then chop it into bite-size pieces.
  2. Cut the deli into thin strips and add it to the lettuce.
  3. Whisk or shake the oil, honey, vinegar, mustard, and salt until the dressing is fully blended.
  4. Pour about one-third to one-half of the dressing over the salad and toss thoroughly.
  5. Taste and add more dressing only if needed. Serve immediately. Refrigerate any unused dressing in a covered container.

Notes

Recipe #167
Category: Meat Salad
Yield: About 6 servings
Method: Toss and dress
Prep: About 15 minutes
Cook: None
Difficulty: Easy
Recipe Details
Kosher: Meat. Texture: Crisp lettuce with tender strips of deli. Flavor: Savory deli balanced by a sweet-tangy honey-mustard dressing.
A Generous Dressing Batch
The family dressing makes more than many bowls of lettuce need. Keep the full family ratio, but pour it on gradually so the salad stays crisp rather than heavy.
What a Beginner Should Look For
Each leaf should have a light sheen of dressing without looking soaked. The deli should be evenly distributed so every serving gets both lettuce and meat.
Cold Deli, Crisp Lettuce
Keep both the lettuce and deli chilled until assembly. This salad is best when the contrast is crisp and cold, not warm or wilted.
Food Safety
Return deli meat to the refrigerator promptly and do not leave the finished salad at room temperature for extended periods.
Beginner Tips
  • Dry the lettuce completely before dressing.
  • Cut deli into narrow strips so it distributes evenly.
  • Shake the dressing again just before using; oil and vinegar naturally separate.
  • Start with less dressing than you think you need.
  • Serve soon after tossing for the best texture.
Troubleshooting
Dressing separates: Shake or whisk it vigorously again before pouring. Salad is soggy: Use less dressing and make sure the lettuce is dry. Dressing is too sweet: Whisk in 1-2 teaspoons extra vinegar or a little more mustard. Deli overwhelms the salad: Add more chopped romaine and toss again.
Variations
  • Add thin red onion for extra bite.
  • Add halved cherry tomatoes for color.
  • Use turkey pastrami or another favorite kosher deli meat.
Make Ahead, Storage & Freezing
Keep lettuce, deli, and dressing separate until serving. Dressing keeps refrigerated up to 5 days; shake well before using. Prepared deli should be kept refrigerated according to package guidance. The dressed salad is best eaten immediately and should not be frozen.
Tip to Hand Down
A good deli salad should still taste like a salad. Let the meat add richness, but keep the lettuce crisp and the dressing light enough that everything stays fresh.
